The first image that springs to mind for most people when they think of themselves as elderly is of someone frail, possibly hunched over and in need of a walking frame. But it needn’t be this way at all – healthy bones are a large part of the reason that an increasing number of senior citizens are upright, healthy and happy to do things like jump out of moving aeroplanes.
National Healthy Bones Week was this month, and in case you didn’t know what that was all about their website Healthy Bones helpfully explains:
“Established in 1994, National Healthy Bones Week raises awareness of the important role calcium-rich foods, such as dairy, have in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis later in life. The campaign educates Australians about the importance of developing and maintaining strong bones and encourages active steps towards a healthier bone mass through the consumption of a calcium-rich diet including dairy foods.”
Obviously this is an issue that is pertinent to those of us who suffer lactose intolerance, and because we often have to forego dairy, it is sometimes difficult to ensure that we’re getting enough calcium in our everyday diets.
