The humble cupcake, which was once only a staple at children’s birthday parties, is now a fashionable phenomenon.

Who would have ever thought a basic recipe containing just flour, sugar, vanilla, eggs and milk could lead to a world wide dessert trend which was in-part sparked by ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ from the hit television show Sex In The City devouring cupcakes from her favourite bakery in one episode.

People at home are now baking recipes from books like The Crabapple Bakery Cupcake Cookbook. There are blogs dedicated solely to cupcakes and creative cupcake ideas. Bakeries devoted to cupcakes have started in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and other major cities world wide. And, pastry chefs now cater cupcakes for special occasion birthdays, weddings and bridal showers.

Why are cupcakes so popular?

Simply, they are the perfect dessert.
• They are small enough to eat by yourself but big enough to satisfy a craving for something sweet.
• Cupcakes are suitable for a mid-morning coffee break, afternoon tea or even a Wedding reception, cupcakes are always welcome.
• They can be plain or fancy.
• Most of all they are fun, quick and tasty
