Cow’s Milk vs. Soy Milk – what’s the difference?

Cow's Milk vs. Soy Milk – what's the difference?

If you are lactose sensitive or have problems digesting ordinary cow’s milk, you’ve probably already tried soy milk – the most popular alternative milk on the market.

Of course the big difference between cow’s milk and soy milk is their origin – while cow’s milk comes from cows, soy milk does not come from milking soy plants! Rather, it is produced from soybeans that have been ground and mixed with water and sweetener.

Where they come from probably explains why they taste different too. Soy milk is considered by some people to have a distinctive non-dairy taste. And while some people get used to it, others find it unpalatable and prefer other substitutes.

Soy milk also does not have much Calcium – around 100 mg per glass less than cow’s milk – though some soy milks available are fortified with added Calcium.

It is argued that one of the proteins in soy milk can help lower the level of cholesterol in the blood1 and that it contains less sodium than cow’s milk. Naturally, these qualities may be of importance for anyone with high cholesterol.

The big benefit that soy milk has over ordinary cow’s milk is that it’s lactose-free. But thanks to products like Zymil, you can now enjoy cow’s milk without the lactose too. And we reckon it tastes a whole lot better!
